Hi my name is Joe Duksa owner and operator of D&D Metal Recycling just west of Steamboat Springs. For years we have offered citizens of Routt County a free place to dispose of unwanted metals on penny margins. Two years ago a buyer approached my wife and I to continue recycling with plans to expand the facility to accept more products. During the due diligence of the sale Routt County informed us we needed to update our infrastructure to meet current codes.
On August 2, 2023 we were issued a cease and desist order because we did not meet the current 2023 standards of a recycling facility. At this point I think it's important to inform you D&D was not shut down for any environmental reasons, rather in need of things such as a building permit for my office, handicap access, screening installation etc.
Running a Recycling Facility is not the most lucrative endeavor I could have chosen. Even though we work on penny margins I love the idea of Regenerative products, such as AG, Beef, and yes even Metals. Over the past 18 years of operation we have diverted millions of pounds of metals from the roadside, landfill and Yampa River (Chuck Lewis Park) to help keep Routt County clean. Metal is 100% recyclable and recycling should be easy to do.
I believe that Routt County needs this type of facility to stay open and now with the current regulations that are required it is a struggle to justify a $500,000 expense to meet the current standards to continue operations and reopen BIGGER BETTER and more BEAUTIFUL and 100% COMPLIANT.
I am asking anyone who shares my love of Recycling and regenerative metals to please donate.
Thank You,
Joe Duksa
